Choosing a platform

Can I open a Stripe account in another country?

The problem“Can I just pick the US or Germany when I sign up for Stripe? Everyone online says it works.”

Only if your business is really based there. Stripe asks for a legal entity, tax ID, address and a real bank account in that country, and checks them. Accounts opened with the wrong country get closed, often with money held, and the country can’t be changed afterwards.

What Stripe says

What does Stripe require?

“You can’t change the country of a Stripe account”

Source: Stripe support

To open an account outside your home country, Stripe asks for a legal entity, tax ID, physical location, phone number, ID and a physical bank account in that country. A US account needs a US-registered business or a representative physically in the US. Stripe’s requirements.

Workarounds

What do people try, and why does it break?

  • Picking the US at sign-upID, address and bank don’t match; the account is closed at verification or at the first payout.
  • A friend’s or relative’s detailsThe account and the income are legally theirs.
  • Buying a “verified Stripe account”It breaks Stripe’s terms and puts your identity and money at risk.
What works

What are the legal routes?

  1. A Merchant of Record that pays out where you live: start in minutes. Who pays out where.
  2. A real US company through Stripe Atlas: $500, then $400 a year in Delaware tax and a yearly Form 5472, with a $25,000 penalty if it is missed. First-year costs.
  3. A real EU company through e-Residency, with an accountant and VAT filings.

First year, selling €2,000 a month (€50 average, half the buyers abroad, subscriptions). Your time (setup, invoicing, tax and bookkeeping each month) valued at €30 an hour. Sources: each provider’s pricing page; company and accountant costs from Stripe Atlas, the State of Delaware, e-resident.gov.ee and enty.io, as on our cost calculator. Existing company: no setup costs; time covers setting up Stripe, Billing and Tax and about 3 hours a month of reconciling payouts, invoices, disputes and tax returns (our estimate).

All-in, the first year costs about €2,010 with AgentaOS. With Stripe it is about €3,066 if you already have a company, and €5,957 to €6,289 if you open one abroad. Stripe’s card fees are lower; tax filing abroad, subscription billing, the company and accountant, and the hours you spend running payments every month are what make the difference.
