What is a Merchant of Record, and do I need one?
The problem“Everyone tells me to use a Merchant of Record. What is it, and why can’t I just use Stripe?”
A Merchant of Record is the company that legally sells your product to your buyer. It takes the payment, owes and files the VAT or sales tax, issues the invoice in its name, handles refunds and disputes, and pays you the rest. You need one when you can’t or don’t want to be the seller yourself, for example when Stripe doesn’t serve your country.
How is it different from Stripe?
| Payment processor (Stripe, used directly) | Merchant of Record | |
|---|---|---|
| Seller on the receipt | You | The Merchant of Record |
| Who owes VAT | You, in every buyer’s country | The Merchant of Record |
| Company needed | Yes, in a supported country | No, individuals can sell |
| Disputes | You answer the bank | It answers the bank |
